The ideal venue must serve both extremes — often within the same concert.
Three acoustic parameters are critical:
- Reverberation Time (RT60): This measures how long it takes for sound to decay by 60 decibels after the source stops. Western concert halls like Vienna's Musikverein aim for approximately 2.0 seconds — ideal for blending orchestral textures. Indian classical music, with its emphasis on individual note clarity, gamakas, and intricate rhythmic patterns, performs best in spaces with an RT60 of roughly 1.0 to 1.5 seconds. Too dry, and the music feels lifeless; too reverberant, and the brigas blur into mush.

- Background Noise Control: The dynamic range of an unamplified veena recital or a bansuri performance can dip below 40 decibels. Air conditioning systems, traffic noise, and even audience rustling become the enemies of musical subtlety. The installation of a sound reinforcement system, now standard for most concerts, reflects the tension between preserving acoustic intimacy and accommodating larger audiences.
Woodlands Theatre (also known as the Woodlands Hotel auditorium), once located on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai in Mylapore, was another cherished Chennai venue. Rasikas of a certain generation speak of its warm, enveloping sound with undisguised nostalgia. The hall's relatively compact dimensions — it seated fewer than 500 — created an immediacy between performer and listener that larger venues struggle to replicate. Its closure was widely mourned as a genuine cultural loss.
In Mumbai, the Shanmukhananda Hall in Matunga, inaugurated in 1958, has served as the primary venue for Carnatic and Hindustani concerts in the city for over six decades. With a seating capacity exceeding 3,000, it is one of the largest classical music venues in India. Its sheer size presents acoustic challenges — the hall was designed in an era that prioritised capacity over acoustic refinement — but its cultural significance is immense. The Nehru Centre and the more intimate Vani Mahal in Chennai offer contrasting models of how scale affects the listening experience.

Designing for Rasa: Stage, Seating, and the Intimate Experience
Beyond raw acoustics, the spatial relationship between artist and audience is perhaps the most critical factor in Indian classical music. Unlike the proscenium model of Western performance, the traditional setting for a classical concert — whether a Carnatic kutcheri or a Hindustani mehfil — is one of proximity and shared space. The performer sits on a low stage or even at floor level; the audience is close enough to observe every facial expression, every hand gesture on the fretboard, every glance exchanged between vocalist and accompanist.

- Wall treatments: A combination of reflective surfaces (plaster, wood panelling) and absorptive materials (acoustic fabric panels, perforated wood) allows fine-tuning of the room's acoustic response. Parallel walls should generally be avoided, as they create flutter echoes — a particularly distracting artefact during quiet passages.
- Capacity sweet spot: For Indian classical music, the ideal hall seats between 300 and 800. Below 300, the economics become challenging for organisers; above 800, the sense of intimacy that defines the classical music experience begins to erode. The legendary baithak format, with audiences of 50–150, remains the gold standard for purists but is rarely viable for public festivals.

Building for the Future: Guidance for New Venues and Sabhas
India is experiencing a paradox: the audience for classical music is arguably more geographically dispersed and digitally connected than ever, yet the number of purpose-built, acoustically excellent concert venues remains woefully small. Most sabhas and organisers continue to rely on kalyana mandapams, hotel ballrooms, and multipurpose auditoriums — spaces designed for weddings and corporate events, not for the delicate art of manodharma sangeetham.
For sabhas and cultural organisations contemplating new venue construction or significant renovation, the following recommendations emerge from both acoustic science and the accumulated wisdom of decades of Indian classical music programming:
- Engage an acoustician early: Acoustic design cannot be retrofitted cheaply. Professionals such as those at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai — whose Tata Theatre and Experimental Theatre represent some of India's finest acoustic engineering — should be consulted during the architectural concept phase, not after construction begins.
- Prioritise flexibility: Design spaces with adjustable acoustic elements — retractable curtains, movable panels, variable ceiling baffles — that allow the room to be tuned for different ensemble sizes and genres. A hall that works for a solo veena recital and a full-scale jugalbandi with percussion is exponentially more valuable than one optimised for a single format.
- Invest in noise isolation: Particularly in urban India, where venues are often surrounded by heavy traffic, the building envelope — walls, windows, doors, and roof — must provide substantial sound transmission loss. Double-glazed windows, acoustically sealed doors, and vibration-isolated HVAC systems are not luxuries but necessities.
- Consider hybrid design for streaming: The post-pandemic era has permanently established live-streaming as part of the classical music ecosystem. New venues should incorporate dedicated camera positions, controlled lighting rigs, and audio feeds optimised for digital broadcast, without compromising the in-hall experience. The Music Academy's own streaming initiatives during and after the 2020 December Season demonstrated both the potential and the pitfalls of this approach.
- Honour the tradition of intimacy: Resist the temptation to maximise seating capacity at the expense of acoustic quality and audience experience. A 500-seat hall that delivers an extraordinary listening experience will build a more loyal and devoted audience — and a stronger reputation — than a 2,000-seat space where the music is reduced to amplified sound.
