About Dadra
Dadra is a light classical vocal form set in Dadra taal of six beats, closely related to Thumri in its emotive and improvisatory approach. Typically exploring themes of romantic longing, devotion, and the beauty of nature, Dadra compositions are shorter and more rhythmically flexible than Thumri, allowing the singer considerable freedom in melodic embellishment and textual interpretation. Performed in popular ragas such as Kafi and Pilu, Dadra is a cherished and elegantly expressive form within the Lucknow and Banaras light classical traditions.
