About Tappa
Tappa is a semi-classical vocal form originating from the folk songs of camel riders in Punjab, later refined into a classical form by Mian Ghulam Nabi Shori in the 18th century. Known for its rapid, rolling taans and intricate melodic ornaments executed at remarkable speed, Tappa is technically among the most demanding vocal forms in Hindusthani music. Set in ragas such as Kafi, Bhairavi, and Jhinjhoti, its quicksilver melodic lines, breathless rhythmic momentum, and vocal agility offer a thrilling and unique artistic experience.
