The most prevalent form of Hindusthani classical vocal music today, Khayal is celebrated for its improvisatory freedom, lyrical expressiveness, and scope for elaborate melodic development. It consists of two compositions — a slow vilambit and a fast drut — with extensive scope for taans, gamaks, and sargam improvisation. Khayal is the primary vehicle of all major gharanas including Jaipur-Atrauli, Agra, Kirana, and Gwalior, each imparting its own distinct aesthetic character, ornamental style, and approach to raga interpretation.
