Padam is a romantic and devotional compositional form in Carnatic classical music, belonging to the traditions of classical dance and later Bharatanatyam, known for its mellifluous ragas and deeply expressive lyrical content. Padams express the nayika bhava — the emotional state of a heroine in relation to the divine — making them ideal vehicles for abhinaya or expressive mime in classical dance performances. Kshetrayya composed hundreds of Padams that remain treasured and widely performed in both music and dance traditions across South India.
