About Santoor
The Santoor is a trapezoidal hammered dulcimer with origins in the folk music of Kashmir, brilliantly adapted to Hindusthani classical concert performance. It consists of numerous strings stretched across a wooden frame, struck by light wooden mallets to produce a bright, cascading sound of unusual beauty. Pandit Shivkumar Sharma pioneered the Santoor as a serious classical concert instrument, demonstrating its remarkable capacity for intricate raga exploration, nuanced tonal expression, and sophisticated rhythmic interplay.
