Thevaram is a collection of Tamil Shaivite hymns composed by the three principal Nayanmars — Thirugnanasambandhar, Thirunavukkarasar, and Sundarar — during the 7th and 8th centuries CE, forming the first seven volumes of the Tirumurai, the sacred canon of Tamil Shaivism. Set to the Pann system of ancient melodic modes that are predecessors of the Carnatic ragas, these hymns are sung in temples and spiritual gatherings and represent one of the oldest continuously practised musical traditions in the world.
