Thiruppugazh is a collection of Tamil devotional poems composed by the saint Arunagirinathar in the 15th century in fervent praise of Lord Murugan, celebrated for its extraordinarily complex rhythmic structures, vivid devotional imagery, and intense spiritual ecstasy. Combining grammatical and musical sophistication with heartfelt devotion, these compositions present unique challenges to performers and deep rewards to listeners. The Thiruppugazh tradition was revived and systematised by Chidambaram Swamigal in the 20th century and remains central to Murugan devotion in Tamil Nadu.
